It is exactly eight weeks from today that I’ll move to New York City. And I must admit that panic is slowly setting in. I am looking around me and all I see is an apartment full of things. Things that I’ll have to pack and carry. Plus all the boxes full of things that have been stored in the basement since last summer. Every now and then, like today, I go through said things and then I realize that I like having them. Today I emptied my bigger dresser (of two) and ended up sorting my jewelry for instance. There is hardly anything I don’t use or like. So everything stays. I also sifted through my vast makeup collection. Even though I might get rid of a few lipsticks or nail polishes, I know that I keep the majority.
I mean I know that I’ll get rid of several pieces of furniture and I won’t take everything from the kitchen with me – e.g. my frying pans are battered and my boyfriend has a much nicer coffee filter machine than I do. But in general I’ll bring my whole household. And I at least understand why I have all those things: they (and even more) were in my three room apartment in Istanbul where I lived alone with the cat. I reduced them to move into that shared two bedroom apartment here in Cambridge, and now I am living in a studio. I have always had less and less space, but I still like my belongings. The only advantage of me panicking is that I tend to stress eat, i.e. I have recently eaten many chocolates from my supply. That again means we won’t have to carry all those delicious treats anymore. Ha!
