Week in review: 11 – 17 October 2021

This week had several highs:

By reading our community board newsletter always carefully, I found out about recreation centers – public centers in New York City that offer small gyms, in and outdoor swimming pools and even classes for little money. Well, right now, until the end of this year, every NYC resident can even register for free for a year. So that is what we did. We would have been fine with even paying $ 150 for a whole year of using all these things, but since it comes for free … I simply didn’t know about these recreation centers before. But they seem like such a great thing, esp. since the closest to us is only a 10 minute walk away. I already tried the indoor pool because my more whale like body feels quite comfortable in water.

On Saturday we went to the movies to watch “The Last Duel” – what a great film! It is based on a true story from French medieval times and revolves around a rape case. The husband and the accused then fight the last officially recognized judicial duel ever in France. I thought the movie was very well made and enjoyed the change of camera and narrative perspectives throughout the story. I now want to read the book that the film is based on to hopefully learn more about this French legend.

Also, this week my beloved tablet suddenly gave up. After four years of continuous duty, it wouldn’t charge anymore. That was actually quite sad, esp. since I use it every night to read in order to fall asleep. So I at once (had to) order a new tablet. Basically, I purchased the same tablet with the same cover just in their newer versions. Despite being sad that the old tablet broke, I am happy with the new device – and fall asleep just as quickly and easily as ever.
