Travel: The United Nations Headquarters in NYC

Treffen der Commission on the status of women des Wirtschafts- und Sozialrates teilzunehmen.

I was responsible for the Model United Nations club at my last school, I often discussed politics with my students, we went to conferences, and every year we organized our own MUN conference. One of the students from Istanbul is so awesome that she was invited to the real UN in New York City last week in order to participate in the sixtieth session of the Commission on the status of women of the ECOSOC. Of course I wanted to see her, and I also took the opportunity to walk together with her through the UN Headquarters in the middle of Manhattan.

I stood in line at the visitor entrance for about twenty minutes before they scanned my passport, then I was allowed to enter the UN premises. The flags weren’t hoist because it was weekend, but it was nevertheless very interesting to visit the headquarters. The countries’ gift to the UN are everyhwere, and there were several photo exhibitions. Besides, a huge MUN conference took place there. It must have been in Italian because there were hundreds of Italian teenagers around. Also in the basement there isn’t only a Starbucks, but also gift shops and a post office which sells specific UN stamps. You can only use them in the Headquarters.

This is the General Assembly, and I found it very impressive to be allowed to have a look at the hall at all.

Just opposite of the UN there is a Turkish Center, and I also noticed a Turkish restaurant around the corner. I’ll certainly try it soon.
