In the past I was a real morning person. My alarm clock rang at five thirty-five, at six twenty-five I walked to my school bus. In between I dressed, had breakfast and applied make-up. I kept this routine until I graduated from school. Without any snooze alarm. And without coffee, which I didn’t like at all then. This has changed. Today I love coffee, like to get up a little later and linger about.

But I also know that I always love it when I manage to get up really early in order to watch the sunrise. I have only positive memories when it comes to sunrises, e.g. when I stood on Nemrut Dağı in the early morning hours on my 30th birthday, and this year at Easter I watched the ballons rise over Cappadocia. In retrorespect I am very pleased with myself because I brought myself to see the sun rise over Branch Pond on our last day in Maine. Here it prove advantageous that the sun rises only shortly before 7 a.m. these days.

It was stunning to experience the tranquillity at the lake and dawn reflecting in the water. For a long time I sat calmly on the little wooden jetty which belonged to our house. For me sunrises are meditative. The world is right then awaking, which is the same everywhere, in the megacity of Istanbul as well as in the wild of Maine. For a short moment everything is still quiet and tired from the night – and then the first sunbeam emerges and paints everything in fresh morning light. The colorful foliage sparkles, squirrels jump through the treetops. One of my friends who I went to Maine with even saw a weasel the day before. Unfortunately, that cute little animal hid from me.

This was a perfect start of the day for me, even though the sun didn’t really show up. Instead more and more clouds turned up, and later in the day it was raining. I also wished for a bit of fog, but it was too warm. In the distance a very light veil of mist in the woods was vaguely perceptible. When I returned to the house after about one and a half hours, I put the kettle on for coffee before I went to take a hot shower.

Anyway, I was wide awake for the day because I had had much time and silence to start the day slowly. That usually of course only works on vacation. In everyday life I am glad when I can sleep a little longer. Sometimes I have to fulfil tasks in the morning, which doesn’t make the morning any more relaxed. But on vacation I can manage to get up very early on at least one day and fully enjoy the morning.
