Travel: Salem Spice Festival

Last weekend I was kind of on the road all the time because right now there are so many great events. Most of them are probably meant to celebrate New England’s beautiful fall, but the weather this year hasn’t yet decided to move on to the next season. There is still wonderful summer weather. But of course I don’t want to complain about this at all because winters at the East Coast are long enough anyway. On Sunday we took the train to Salem to visit the Spice Festival. Groupon gave me the idea because it sold tickets for half the price.

Unfortunately it was raining a little on Sunday, but that didn’t harm our trip. Salem is a cute little town with many wooden houses, much history and many museums. We first went to the Witch House where the story of the witch-hunt is told. Afterwards we walked to Pioneer Village where the Spice Festival took place.

The festival itself was very small, but also very pretty in the open air museum. On the one hand there were demonstrations for things like making mead and ketchup yourself, and you could also watch a blacksmith working. On the other hand there local companies sold spices and jewelry at stalls. The baker was probably the most popular one since he sold delicious spice donuts and coffee.

Since I am still storing away all my belongings in the apartment, I didn’t want to buy something pretty-but-unnecessary. Instead I bought a little bag full with catnip for Canavar. He loves it very much and spends hours with licking the bag.

Besides, we were allowed to walk into several small wooden huts where we could see how the first European settlers in Salem lived in the 17th century. They must have been a lot smaller than we are nowadays because the doorways were low and the beds shorter. As the Spice Festival was small and we had seen everything after a short time, we walked back to the town center. There we had an early dinner before taking the train back to Boston.
