1920s love: The Roaring Twenties Lawn Party

“A little party never killed nobody, so we gon’ dance until we drop/A little party never killed nobody, right here, right now’s all we got”, singt Fergie und alle denken sofort an “The Great Gatsby”. He looked at her the way all women want to be looked at by a man.”

  4. Swing ist gar nicht so schwer. Wir waren gestern bei unserer ersten Tanzstunde.

“A little party never killed nobody, so we gon’ dance until we drop/A little party never killed nobody, right here, right now’s all we got”, sings Fergie, and everybody thinks of “The Great Gatsby”. Who wouldn’t like to attend a huge party at a castle, leave the town to go there, start the decadent party while wearing pretty dresses already in the afternoon, and maybe find a man like Gatsby, “He looked at her the way all women want to be looked at by a man.” When I read of the Roaring Twenties Lawn Party on 2 August in the Boston Globe a few weeks ago, I pretty much jumped up and down like Donkey in Shrek and knew that I absolutely had to go there. And because I love the 1920s and the party so much, you must now get ready for two posts. Today I show you photos of the party, and next time I tell you a bit about the clothes and makeup.

So I bought my ticket online for $25 and properly prepared for the party by e.g. doing a lot of research on Pinterest [here]. On Sunday noon I took the train to Ipswich as was proper for the 1920s. When getting off I met three wonderful ladies who also wanted to attend the party. We thought that another group wanted to go there too because they were just perfectly dressed which made us green with envy – the men had great suspenders, the women pretty hats – but they were on their way to a polo match. We took a bus from the train station to awesome Crane Estate. The bus is actually taking people to Crane Beach for $5, but stopped for us extra. Somehow we were the only ones arriving on foot, all the other guests were driving up Castle Hill in their modern cars. We were pretty exhausted, when we eventually arrived at the mansion, and really needed a cool white wine – maybe not one of our best ideas in the blazing afternoon sun, but at least the most fun.

I was very positively surprised that all guests had made a big effort to dress properly. Except for some modern technical accessories, we totally felt like being in the 1920s. Since Americans are such nice people, they also complimented each other on the time-wise perfect choice of clothes. There also was a lot of small talk. While we walked around the huge estate, some played badminton or chess. Others had brought giant picnic hampers, and sat on their blankets eating. Later on there were little competitions for women and men, a cocktail race for instance (think of an egg and spoon race, only with brimful cocktail glasses), and also a short dancing lesson for Swing. But as we had neither any clue nor talent, we rather invented our own steps. We had so much fun on all accounts, and even met a group of men that voluntarily and rather badly danced together with us while beautiful live music was played. We’ve also made many plans how we will attend the Roaring Twenties Lawn Party next year, and also how we will spend the time until then.

The party took place from 3 to 8 p.m., and we said goodbye shortly before the end in order to stand at the parking lot and politely ask other guests if they passed by the train station and could take us there. The problem is that the beach bus is not working in the evening, and Crane Estate is about 5 miles from the station. We were lucky to find a friendly woman who gave us a lift. And because the last train departs a quarter past 9, we had enough time to enter the closest bar and eat burgers. This is the only little minus at the Roaring Twenties Lawn Party: there is only one wine and one beer stall each (they also sell water, but who drinks water at a 1920s party?!), but there weren’t any food stalls or you had to pre-order the food, resp.

Please note:

  1. Reading the daily newspaper is rewarded by great event tips.
  2. Just decide to attend a party alone – it is so easy to get to know new people.
  3. As long as there aren’t any more 1920s parties, we will go to polo matches.
  4. Swing actually isn’t that difficult. We were at our first proper dancing lesson yesterday.

    LG Ivi
