4th of July 2015 in Boston

Am besten beschreiben kann ich den Independence Day 2015 in Boston mit diesem Wort: WOW! Es war das erste Mal, dass ich am 4. Juli in den USA war und Boston ist berühmt für die große Feier und natürlich für die historische Tatsache, dass der Unabhhängigkeitskrieg hier mit der Boston Tea Party begann. Da ich früh genug wach war, fuhr ich am Samstagmorgen mit der Metro nach Boston, wo vom Old States House kurz vor 10 Uhr die Declaration of Independence gelesen wurde, wie schon 1776. Ein Trompeter kündigte traditionell die Erklärung an, dann wurde die Nationalhymne gesungen. Gleich am Anfang beim Satz “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” habe ich eine kleine  Träne verdrückt, weil der Satz für mich die Grundidee der USA zusammenfasst und die Atmosphäre dort am Old States House wunderschön war. Dort gab es auch eine kurze Parade und am Ende der Erklärung Konfetti aus der Kanone.

Anschließend bin ich nochmal nach Hause gefahren und habe mit dem Kater ein Mittagsschläfchen gemacht, denn ich wollte unbedingt zur großen Party an der Esplanade am Charles River in Boston und dafür fit sein. Um 17 Uhr stand ich am Eingang an der Esplanade und durfte, nachdem alle meine Taschen durchsucht worden waren, zur Konzertbühne gehen. Viele Besucher waren mit Klappstühlen und Picknick gekommen. Und ich war wie übrigens auch am Morgen schon traurig, dass ich gar keine Kleidung in US-Farben oder mit der Fahne darauf gerade hier habe. Zum Glück wurden kurz darauf kostenlos kleine Fähnchen und Krönchen der Freiheitsstatue verteilt. So durfte ich dann doch fleißig die Fahne schwenken, als das Konzert des Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra mit einer Mischung von Klassik, berühmten Popsongs und Filmmusik begann. Dieses endete zwei Stunden später mit einem halbstündigen riesigen Feuerwerk und ich war restlos begeistert. Außerdem gab es einen Fallschirmjägerabsprung der US-Navy, wobei eine große Flagge in ihrer Mitte langsam ausgebreitet wurde, Kanonenschüsse und einen sehr tief fliegenden Kampfjet. Zwischendurch habe ich mich einer Gruppe von Puerto Ricanern angeschlossen, die ebenfalls begeistert waren. Zumindest am 4th of July in Boston habe ich mich sofort willkommen gefühlt. Auch wenn im Supermarkt die tollen Cupcakes in US-Farben nun wieder verschwunden sind, weht doch an vielen Häusern weiterhin die Fahne. Meine kleine habe ich in meinem Zimmer an die Wand gehängt.

4th of July 2015 in Boston, Independence Day

I can best describe Independence Day 2015 in Boston using this one word: WOW! For me it was the first time that I’ve ever celebrated this day. Boston is famous for its big party and of course also for the historic fact that here the Boston Tea Party took place, which is kind of the starting point for the later War of Independence. As I woke up early enough, I took the metro to Boston on Saturday morning. There, the Declaration of Independence was read from the Old States House like in 1776. As a tradition a trumpeter announced the declaration, then the national anthem was sung. Right at the beginning at “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” I shed a little tear because for me this sentence sums up the basic idea of the US. Also the atmosphere at the Old States House was wonderful. There also was a small parade and in the end confetti was shot.

4th of July 2015 in Boston, Independence Day

After this I went home again and took a nap with the cat because I really wanted to go to the big party at the Esplanade at Charles River in Boston and I didn’t want to feel tired. At 5 p.m. I was at the entrance, and after they had checked all my bags, I was free to go to the concert stage. Many people had brought their folding chairs and food for a picnic. And like in the morning I was again sad that I didn’t have any clothes in the US colors or with the flag on them here yet But I was lucky because they gave away little flags and the crown of the Statue of Liberty for free. So I was able to wave the flag when the concert of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra started. They played a great mix of classical music, famous pop songs and film music. It all ended two hours later with huge fireworks, that went on for half an  hour. I found it all amazing. Besides, the US Navy sent some paratroopers who slowly unfolded a big US flag in their middle; there also were cannon shots, and a very low-flying jet fighter. In the meantime I had got to know a group of Puerto Ricans, who also loved the celebrations. At least on the 4th of July I at once felt very welcome in Boston. Even though the great cupcakes in US colors have already disappeared from the supermarkets, many houses still raise the flag. I put my little flag on the wall of my room.

    Ich bin grade via Facebook auf deinen Post gestoßen und ich finde ihn richtig toll. Ich selber bin ein riesen New York Fan, aber war leider noch nie in den USA. Kommt hoffentlich alles mal.
    Ich liebe es einfach die Beiträge zum 4. Juli zu lesen und mit euch darin einzutauchen. Deine Fotos sind wirklich gut gewählt.
    Ich werde jetzt noch ein bisschen bei dir stöbern.

  2. Super Bilder! Ich wohne auch in New England (in Connecticut), leider musste ich am 4.Juli arbeiten. Ich war hier allerdings am Veteransday auf einer Parade, in dem kleinem Ort in dem ich bin ist das natürlich nicht so beeindruckend als in Boston, aber war interessant.
