Immer wieder sonntags #97

So many people here told me how dangerous it is to bike in Boston. Because of the cars. Leaving aside the fact that probably none of them has any idea of traffic in Istanbul, they are also not right when it comes to the Bostonian car drivers. Those do pay a lot of attention to bikers, and sometimes they even let me go first. Some even open their windows and compliment my pretty bike asking where I bought it. Drivers don’t trouble me when I rush in the morning – usually in the nick of time – in bright sunlight. At Harvard Square I drink in the fresh scent of bacon and coffee before I bike across the bridge to Boston. But other bikers are a lot worse and more reckless. They weave through traffic, pass cars so close that they turn down side mirrors, cross red traffic lights, etc. On Friday morning a father, whose kid sat behind him on the bike, stopped in the middle of the free bike lane. Although I had kept safe distance, my brake path was way to long, and there just wasn’t any space to swerve. So I had to drive against an orange barrel. The father continued biking without turning around at all. At least there suddenly were about ten other men who all wanted to help me. Fortunately, only my handlebars had become loose, otherwise nothing had happened. I slowly biked to work, and now I know that I have to pay even more attention to other bikers.
