Fail: Istanbul Panorama 1453

Ich kam also gut hin.

Fail: Istanbul Panorama 1453 Museum

On Saturday I had an idea: I would finally visit a museum in Istanbul that I had wanted to go to for nearly five years. Panorama 1453, which is a huge panorama picture of the conquest of Istanbul. It’s not that far away from where I live, and directly at the tram stop Topkapı. It was easy for me to get there. This is pretty much the whole positive side.

The park around the museum and stretching to the city walls – the museum is about where Fatih Mehmet the Conquerer together with his Ottoman army burst the Byzantine city walls – is beautiful at first sight, but very dirty at second sight. It seems to be a popular place amongst very conservative Turks, who go there to picnic. They even bring their own carpets, but forget to take their garbage home. Even in the little ponds there is more plastic than water.

It got really terrible when I queued up for the museum. Never before have I experienced something like this. The women – it was only the women, the men stayed calm – nagged, queue-jumped, pushed … the whole package. They couldn’t enter the museum fast enough, they couldn’t all stand in the first row at the fence in the Panorama, so they pushed the others or rather each other aside. They put their heads and arms into every direction, lifted up their kids, only in order to take the best selfie of all – everywhere. They also shouted so loudly that you could hardly notice the background sound of the museum – and an army of 80.000 men was definitely not quiet.

The Panorama itself is quite nice, as far as I can tell. The visitors stand in the middle and (theoretically) walk in a circle to see everything. In between there is something like a trench in which there are old canons and other war equipment. Still the museum isn’t worth the 10 Lira entrance fee because there isn’t anything besides the painting. At least I got a reduction for being a teacher. Otherwise I would have been even more annoyed. No man there is brave enough to call any of the women off, which is why there is a big chaos and the pleasure gets lost. Maybe it’s better during the week, unlike Saturday when whole busloads of Turkish aunts were dropped off there, of whom none goes home before having taken at least 1,000 selfies. But to be honest, there are so many great museums in Istanbul that you can just forget about this one.
