Travel: Branch Pond, Maine in fall

I actually wanted to go to the Niagara Falls when we started to discuss that we might go away together for Columbus Day weekend. But my friends outvoted me which I now am very happy about. Of course we all were willing to compromise which is why I could choose a house with WiFi. Since Friday evening we are in Maine, more precisely at Branch Pond in Palermo. There is a region here where many place names are copied. There are i.a. China, Dresden, Belgrade and Rome just around the corner.

It is the perfect place to relax. I hear from people that they’ve always wanted to visit Maine. Not me, but I didn’t have any clue. I didn’t know that it is that beautiful. Maine is the Pine Tree State, even though so far I have seen nearly only broadleaves. There are so many lakes and silence here. Sure, there are only 1.3 million people living on 90,000 square kilometers (this is about 1/4 of the total area of Germany). It took us three hours to drive up here in a car.

Since I woke up early on Saturday morning, I have been totally enchanted. Everything is colorful and so pretty. When I look out of the windows, a squirrel jumps from tree to tree. Every now and then herons and wild geese fly across the lake. Fortunately, I had the courage to climb in one of the two kayaks that belong to our house on Sunday. It was so worth it because the view from the lake is different again. Kayaking was so much fun that I did it again yesterday for three hours. I went across the whole lake. There are many small islands in the lake, and of course I just had to go ashore and explore one of them.

I had put my camera behind my seat in the kayak so that I could change lenses. Unfortunately, I was too slow though when a crayfish walked next to my little boat. Nevertheless I took so many pictures on my trip that I can never show all of them to you. I didn’t only walk around the island, but also paddled to the one end of the lake afterwards, passing by all the colorful trees and several small summer houses. Later on I went through reed into very shallow water between islands, which seems to be on its way to turn into land eventually. There it was really quiet, the warm sun shone onto my naked arms, and I felt really blessed. At one point I noticed that I didn’t dwell on thoughts, but only concentrated on the here and now.

This place is just amazing, and I am glad that I didn’t insist on going to the Niagara Falls. Else I would surely have missed this great fall landscape and the relaxing kayaking on the quaint lake, the delicious food, the great conversations, our board game nights and the stelliferous nights. Today we drive back to Boston, but visit Portland, which is famous for its good food, on the way. Then we return to our everyday life, which I am also looking forward to (and also to the cat).

I will show you some more photos soon because I am totally in love with all these colors and also their reflections in the lake.

    Liebe Grüße an dich
