My first baseball game

I was a huge fan of being anywhere you could smoke and drink at two in the afternoon without judgment.”

Außerdem gingen immer wieder La-Ola-Wellen durchs gesamte Publikum.

Last Friday night I went to watch a baseball game for the first time, together with four American friends. The Boston team is called “Red Sox”, and they play in famous, 103 year-old Fenway Park. To be honest I didn’t have and still don’t have any clue about baseball. I only learned from Sex and the City that the Yankees are the New York City team, and that there are hotdogs and beer in the stadium: “Miranda was a huge fan of the Yankees. I was a huge fan of being anywhere you could smoke and drink at two in the afternoon without judgment.” Fortunately, none of the five of us does really know much about baseball, but we all agreed that we wanted to go to a Red Sox game because of the atmosphere. And because of the beer and the hotdogs.

We were even positively surprised when, shortly before seven p.m., we sat down in the fifth row which turned out to be close to the field. While most spectators were dressed in red and white according to the team colors and carried at least one piece of memorabilia, we were wrapped in warm jackets and scarves because it now gets pretty cold in the evening. At least we could sing along. And people there sing a lot. They started with the US anthem, later on everybody sang the baseball anthem “Take me out to the ballgame” and several oldies. Besides, again and again Mexican waves went through the audience. During the first break we got up to buy beer and hotdogs as we had planned. Unfortunately, they are always very expensive in a stadium, but in a great atmosphere like that they also taste even better.

Oh yeah, of course we also watched the game. Again and again at least. It actually takes quite some time until a player really hits the ball, and everybody starts running. At that point the game becomes really exciting. But the time until then is quite long. At least they often cut the players’ theme music – apparently, every player has a song that they play for him during the whole season every time it’s his turn. The DJ was awesome in any case. We talked about everything and anything in the meantime and decided which players looked hot. Not that many unfortunately. But in the end it was a great night because it really is fun to sit in a crowded stadium and experience the atmosphore. Most people really rooted for their team. The Red Sox eventually beat the Baltimore Orioles. The baseball season has nearly finished, but we have planned to go to Fenway Park again next year. In winter we want to go and see a Celtics basketball match.
